Sixth Grade Ceremony of Noble Good
The sixth grade has just completed their Medieval History block, concluding with the Ceremony of Noble Good, often referred to as the Knighting Ceremony. During the spring, the students were asked to identify a human virtue to refine and reflect within themselves, to work with an adult sponsor to deepen this exploration, and commit to tasks and acts of service both at home and within the school. They were encouraged to embrace and acknowledge their growing responsibilities and capacities for being a valuable contributor within the community. The students were also asked to create a personal coat of arms earlier in the year that incorporated symbols and colors for the school, their family, their past and their future.
The Ceremony stands as an opportunity to commemorate and celebrate this rite of passage—moving from childhood into young adulthood. This year the event took place in the Eurythmy Room, adorned with the student’s coat of arms. Families, teachers and adult sponsors joined Ms. Cummings to recognize and witness the students' achievements, developing strengths and newfound capacities. The solemnity of the ceremony was beautifully balanced with a student performance of the Cumbia—Colombia's national dance, and one of the most representative rhythms and folk dance traditions in Latin America. It has musical and cultural elements from American indigenous people, African and European cultures.
Many thanks to parent and faculty musicians, Andrea and Anthony Douglass, Tudor Bota and Glenn Dickson for the accompaniment.
Congratulations to the sixth grade! Photos of the ceremony can be found here.
