Our Fall 2022 Michaelmas Celebration

Thursday, September 29, marked a very important day in the festival life of our school—Michaelmas, the Festival of Courage! Under sunny skies, students in grades one through eight, faculty and staff celebrated this in-school festival with a reenactment of St. George taming the dragon, followed by our traditional Michaelmas games. It was a joy to welcome parents and caregivers to observe this special event created by the children and teachers for each other. Having faculty, staff, and parents take a turn in our Michaelmas game was a wonderful surprise for the students. Thank you for your participation! Photos from our celebration are available here.

Just before the celebration commenced, we hosted our weekly Community Cafe, where Lauren Smith discussed the origins of Michealmas and why it is celebrated in Waldorf schools, particularly in the Autumn. Lauren referenced and distributed copies of Michaelmas - A Festival for our Time, a recently published article by the Waldorf Handwork Educators. This content offers an engaging description of this festival and how it is relevant now more than ever.

Brave and true I will be
Each good deed sets me free.
Each kind word makes me strong.
I will fight for the right,
I will conquer the wrong.
